THE PROJECT

About antiques

An independent knowledge library on the archaeology and material culture of the land of Israel, connecting periods, places, finds and research.

Updated

From a find to a question

A pot, inscription or building does not tell its story alone. Its location, context, dating and possible interpretations matter. antiques connects these questions with sources readers can locate and examine, offering an approachable starting point for exploring archaeological research.

Who is behind the site

The site is owned by Jonathan Santo and operates as an independent public knowledge project. It is not a government body, research institution, museum or academic journal. Researchers, institutions and publications are named to identify sources, without implying sponsorship, partnership or institutional affiliation.

What the library offers

  • Period guides and a timeline that place changes and discoveries in historical context.
  • Pages on places and find types, with explanatory articles on reading evidence, dating and interpretation.
  • Research cards identifying publications, their questions, the extent of reading and links to external sources.
  • Volume contents and an organised bibliography for further study.

Start with a period, move to a place or find type, then follow an article to the research behind it. The site map groups pages by subject; search helps locate names, places and terms.

Three languages, shared editorial responsibility

The library is available in Hebrew, English and Russian. Source titles are also retained in their original language to support discovery. Texts and translations were prepared with AI assistance and internal consistency checks. This does not constitute peer review or independent professional verification of every translation.

Research invites questions and corrections

We distinguish archaeological observations from interpretations, describe limits and prefer precise wording over unsupported certainty. If you find an error, a better source or a reading difficulty, use the contact page. The sources policy explains how corrections are assessed and how attribution and rights are respected.
