Mongol and Ilkhanid Iran: a palace and a mausoleum

The Met's timeline lists Mongol rule from 1221 to 1256 and the Ilkhanid dynasty from 1256 to 1353. A new dynasty already rises in the south before the row ends, so it overlaps the row that follows.

1221-1353 CE

The frame

The Met's timeline for Iran, 1000-1400 lists "Mongol rule, 1221-1256" and the "Ilkhanid dynasty, 1256-1353". Following conflict with the Khwarazmshah dynasty, the Mongols sweep through and take control of Iran; their conquests, the page says, devastate the region and affect the balance of artistic production. The Ilkhanids, the branch of the Mongol dynasty that takes control of West Asia after putting a definitive end to the Abbasid caliphate (1258), establish rule from the city of Tabriz in northwestern Iran; following the Ilkhanid sultan Ghazan's conversion to Islam in 1295, both religious and secular arts flourish. Boundaries and overlaps

At the start of the row, 1221 is the end of the Khwarazmshah dynasty in the list. At its end, the Muzaffarid dynasty in the south begins in the list ca. 1340, thirteen years before the end of the Ilkhanid dynasty in 1353, so the site's last row for Iran begins in 1340, before this one ends. The Jalayirids, a Mongol family that establishes rule over Iraq and northwestern Iran, are listed ca. 1360-1406. Source 1.
