The frame

In the chronological table of the Department of Antiquities, Cyprus, the Frankish period runs from 1191 to 1489, for the whole island. The Department of Antiquities pages cited here could not be opened for checking on 24 October 2026; the details from them follow notes taken from those pages at an earlier stage and were not re-checked. The Met's timeline for 1000-1400 CE places in 1189-1192 the Third Crusade, in which the English king Richard I Lionheart established the Crusader kingdom of Cyprus "after seizing control of the Byzantine island", and sees in the event "the decisive influx of Western artistic traditions into Cyprus". Boundaries and overlaps

The timeline does not give the year 1191; the table's year lies within its span. The UNESCO page on the painted churches in the Troodos calls the 13th century "the early period of Latin (western) rule in Cyprus" and places the beginning of Venetian rule in 1489, as the table does. In churches of the previous period, painting continued into this one: the same page mentions 14th-century wall paintings at Panagia Phorbiotissa, that is, Asinou. Sources 2, 3, 1.

On this site

Three articles are placed in this period. "Kolossi: a commandery of the military orders" deals with a building that the Hospitallers built in 1210 as the seat of their commandery, which passed briefly to the Templars in 1306 and was destroyed in the Mamluk raids of 1425-1426. "The Royal Chapel at Pyrga: a crowned couple at the foot of the Cross" deals with a chapel that, according to a lost inscription, was built and decorated in 1421/22. "The Paphos castle: built by the Franks, blown up by the Venetians" deals with a castle that the Franks built in the mid-13th century, and is placed in the Venetian period as well. Sources 4, 5, 6.
