RESEARCH RECORD
Yardenna Alexandre’s study of building strata, subterranean pits and pottery in Nazareth, with publication details and a reading guide.
This record provides bibliographic details and independent reading notes. The full study was written by the authors listed in the publication details; the link leads to its source.
An excavation beside the Annunciation compound identified Iron Age, late Hellenistic-Early Roman and medieval building strata. An early house incorporated subterranean pits; pottery discarded there is discussed in relation to ritual purity. 1.
Read the architectural sequence separately from material deposited within it. A sherd may date a fill without dating the cutting of a pit or every stage in a house’s use. Connecting plans, find contexts and proposed dates is central to evaluating a settlement history.
Continue from the original study to the library’s Nazareth evidence guide and site page. Together they distinguish observations from one excavation from claims about the settlement as a whole.
