Groundwater and an agricultural landscape

The study describes gravity-fed qanat systems at three Arava sites. Excavated farms included reservoirs, cultivated areas and buildings, with finds assigned to the Early Islamic period. 1.

Read a water system as a sequence of collection, conveyance, storage and use. Examine how each part relates to surrounding structures and land. An object’s date in a fill does not necessarily date the cutting of a tunnel; distinguish construction, operation and abandonment.

Compare the Ramla aqueduct study to consider different water-supply solutions. This is a technological comparison, not an assumption that both systems operated identically or belonged to one administration.
