A historical question and degrees of confidence

The paper revisits proposed evidence for Jewish gladiators and introduces additional candidates. Its abstract reaches a cautious position: participation remains possible, but the evidence is inconclusive. 1.

Ask what each item demonstrates: presence at an arena, attendance as a spectator or participation in combat. These are separate questions. Identifying someone as Jewish and identifying that person as a gladiator each require an argument; combining two suggestions does not make either certain.

Follow the move from source to claim: who produced it, in what setting and what remains unknown. The research-reading guide offers further tools for assessing conclusions drawn from limited evidence.
