Two Greek inscriptions in the adjoining pool name governor Flavius Marcianus Antipater. His titulature supports a late fifth- or early sixth-century term of office; one text is identified as an epigram. 1.
An inscription offers more than a name: official title, syntax and placement can each support an argument. Separate surviving letters from suggested restorations, and an official’s date from the date of the installation. This preserves the chain of reasoning when the text is fragmentary.
The inscriptions guide explains transcription, translation and restoration. Follow the original study for linguistic analysis and the comparisons underlying its interpretation.
